What is SAE Baja?

We design, build, and test an offroad vehicle for the international Baja SAE collegiate competition.
We compete against 100+ colleges in events. The main one taking place in May/June.

Team Breakdown

Powertrain

Powertrain: the system that delivers power from the engine to the wheels.
Use CNC and manual machines to craft parts such as the gears, splines, and gearbox.
Gain hands-on experience by testing and improving the system.

Suspension

Suspension: the system that manages the car's mass over terrain.
Use simulations and mathmatics to analyze and optimize suspension geometry and performance.
Use CNC and manual machines to manufacture hubs and suspension joints along with welding the suspension together.

Chassis-Ergonomics

Chassis: the structural framework of the car that supports all components and protects the driver.
Learn how to design and build a Chassis to optimize for performance while maintaining a high factor of safety.
Ergonomics: focus of the team on creating a comfortable and efficient driving environment.
Design, mold, and manufacture carbon fiber body panels.

Business

Manage relationships with sponsors and handle outreach efforts.
Oversee the development and maintenance of the team's website and social media presence.
Present a business plan to industry professionals in a international competition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am not an engineer, can I still join?

A: YES OF COURSE! All majors and skill levels are welcome! A lot of members come in with little to no experience and we are here to help you learn.

Q: How can I get involved?

A: Show up to garage or machine shop whenever it is open. Garage times can be found in our slack and the machine shop hours are 7am - 3pm during weekdays.

Q: How does the team communicate?

A: Our team utilizes slack for all team announcements and discussions. For incoming students, you will have the opportunity to join our slack once you arrive on campus during the Flock Party and at our meetings. For current students, you can email us at sae@stevens.edu and ask for the slack invite.

Our Workspace

Stevens SAE Baja's cars are all fully made on by our students using the many machines and tools we have on right on campus. Our two workspaces are our garage, located behind Humphreys Hall and the Stevens Machine Shop and MakerCenter located inside the ABS Engineering Center.

The Garage

ABS Engineering Center

Our Garage is where most of the engineering process takes place from design to testing to manufacturing. Along with a large selection of powertools you can find a Bridgeport Mill Lathe, a Plasma Cutter, a Manual Lathe, and Welders (Pictured below).

Stevens Machine Shop and MakerCenter is where a lot of our suspension and power train manufacturing take place. The Machine Shop hosts a wide variety of machines: CNC Lathes, CNC Mills, a CNC Router, and a 4 axis Fanuc Robodrill (Pictured below).
